OED and a pic!

Does anyone know where I might be able to access to an Oxford English Dictionary online, or know where I can look something similar up for free? I'll admit to being way too lazy to hit the library for this one.

And for [livejournal.com profile] saltcandy: A picture to show that I was TOTALLY Lolita, before people knew about Lolis.

This was for a Halloween party I went to with my best friend Becky (the little Geisha girl there) at the International house on the IUPUI campus. Yes, we were chasing Dutch and other non-English-speaking men. This is, maybe, 18 years ago? I'll have to ask Becky. She's one of those people whose mutant power is to remember exactly what year we did which idiotic thing.

(Upon seeing this picture, [livejournal.com profile] sharpeslass marveled that I didn't make myself sexier for this party, but I think I totally found a boyfriend anyway. The following year I was "The Terminatrix." Or maybe that was the "drowning victim from the Love Boat" year. I was not a girl to purchase boring, sexy costumes from Spencer's.)

For free here: (the compact version of the english dictionary) just type your word in the top right search area and go! Oxford Dic. Oh, and you can choose between UK and US settings (which is good for me because I'm a snob)!

Chasing Dutch guys eh? Sounds like fun...I'm the same - if I am going to dress up for Halloween, I have to do it wierd and right. This usually means my obsessive side comes out to play, and I've been known to actually make things like a full 18th century panier dress with the drop train and about 8 metres of satin, and the other year did I an 15th century venetian style dress for the ren fest complete with ruched sleeves and the whole bit. Sadly none of it fits now because I am half the size I used to be *face palm*

But you look adorable! The freakiest Loli costume I've ever seen is on one of my favourite band's drummer, who has been known to pull a Dir-en-grey on occasion and I have seen a picture of him dressed as a Loli, complete with hairribbons, tights and a skirt. My brain broke - not sure if it was good or bad!

Thank you! Darn them, they just don't want that whole version out there, do they? Well, I suppose it is pretty huge and probably represents centuries of research... :)

Do you sew? I might have someone else sew me a costume (coffcoffMom), and I've had a few very cool ones that way, but I can't sew for crap. :)

And LOL, I'd totally forgotten about this pic. I have a drawerful of pictures that I'd forgotten all about! Of course I can't find any of my best, or worst, however you look at it, hair. I.e., when I had it magenta, or shaved at the sides, or the time I had a mullet, or whatever. Pout.

I just think they are being pricks witholding valuable information! ;-)

Yep, I sew. Largely self taught, but I have this amazing ability to create costumes without a pattern if I have to. I'm told this is centuries of family genetics, starting off in 1600 with french silk weavers and right up to the present, because my mum was asked to work on the Queen's coronation robes! (I'm in heady company!)

Hey, if your mom is volunteering to sew for you, take her up on it!

Oh I would love to see your piccies if you find them - my sister had blue hair at one point and a mohawk. We are not a conventual family by any stretch of the imagination!

OMG yess!!! You are the OG Loli! You seriously look like you're 10 years old there. The baby bottle is freaking me out a little, but the bangs are total win. And really, there is no better way to stand out at a Halloween party than to NOT dress sexy. ;)
(All you need to update this Loli costume is a digital camera with pictures of "tourists" in it.)

gah! this reminds me...I have to start thinking about Halloween! I have no ideas! >_<" I want to kick myself for getting rid of my fallback costume...pink, grownup-sized, one-piece footie pajamas with cows printed on it...drunk people always thought I was dressed as a cow.

[identity profile] jedishampoo.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Pink Footie Pajamas FTW! But no baby bottle to distinguish you from those in cow costume? ;) And you got rid of the jammies??? I know it's cold in the bay area; you could at least have had them for snuggling, heh.

And I agree about standing out! Hey, I dressed slutty to go out partying-- Halloween was a time for dressing like a dork. I even went to a "bondage-themed Halloween party" one year dressed as a member of the B-52s... Y'see, my turquoise dress and yellow tights and beehive stood out among all the black leather and skin. ;)

I have several fallback costumes... only because of all those Worldcons and RenFaires and whatnot. Jedi, stuff like that. Don't think I can fit into my Lara Croft costume at the moment, though. Oops.

Thanks for the link! And hey, thanks-- I was a total goofball, I know, but we had so much fun. :)
