OED and a pic!
Sep. 13th, 2008 09:20 amDoes anyone know where I might be able to access to an Oxford English Dictionary online, or know where I can look something similar up for free? I'll admit to being way too lazy to hit the library for this one.
And for
saltcandy: A picture to show that I was TOTALLY Lolita, before people knew about Lolis.

This was for a Halloween party I went to with my best friend Becky (the little Geisha girl there) at the International house on the IUPUI campus. Yes, we were chasing Dutch and other non-English-speaking men. This is, maybe, 18 years ago? I'll have to ask Becky. She's one of those people whose mutant power is to remember exactly what year we did which idiotic thing.
(Upon seeing this picture,
sharpeslass marveled that I didn't make myself sexier for this party, but I think I totally found a boyfriend anyway. The following year I was "The Terminatrix." Or maybe that was the "drowning victim from the Love Boat" year. I was not a girl to purchase boring, sexy costumes from Spencer's.)

This usually means my obsessive side comes out to play, and I've been known to actually make things like a full 18th century panier dress with the drop train and about 8 metres of satin, and the other year did I an 15th century venetian style dress for the ren fest complete with ruched sleeves and the whole bit. Sadly none of it fits now because I am half the size I used to be *face palm*
But you look adorable! The freakiest Loli costume I've ever seen is on one of my favourite band's drummer, who has been known to pull a Dir-en-grey on occasion and I have seen a picture of him dressed as a Loli, complete with hairribbons, tights and a skirt. My brain broke - not sure if it was good or bad!

Date: 2008-09-13 09:59 pm (UTC)Do you sew? I might have someone else sew me a costume (coffcoffMom), and I've had a few very cool ones that way, but I can't sew for crap. :)
And LOL, I'd totally forgotten about this pic. I have a drawerful of pictures that I'd forgotten all about! Of course I can't find any of my best, or worst, however you look at it, hair. I.e., when I had it magenta, or shaved at the sides, or the time I had a mullet, or whatever. Pout.

Date: 2008-09-13 10:38 pm (UTC)Yep, I sew. Largely self taught, but I have this amazing ability to create costumes without a pattern if I have to. I'm told this is centuries of family genetics, starting off in 1600 with french silk weavers and right up to the present, because my mum was asked to work on the Queen's coronation robes! (I'm in heady company!)
Hey, if your mom is volunteering to sew for you, take her up on it!
Oh I would love to see your piccies if you find them - my sister had blue hair at one point and a mohawk. We are not a conventual family by any stretch of the imagination!

gah! this reminds me...I have to start thinking about Halloween! I have no ideas! >_<" I want to kick myself for getting rid of my fallback costume...pink, grownup-sized, one-piece footie pajamas with cows printed on it...drunk people always thought I was dressed as a cow.

Date: 2008-09-14 04:10 pm (UTC)And I agree about standing out! Hey, I dressed slutty to go out partying-- Halloween was a time for dressing like a dork. I even went to a "bondage-themed Halloween party" one year dressed as a member of the B-52s... Y'see, my turquoise dress and yellow tights and beehive stood out among all the black leather and skin. ;)
I have several fallback costumes... only because of all those Worldcons and RenFaires and whatnot. Jedi, stuff like that. Don't think I can fit into my Lara Croft costume at the moment, though. Oops.
