Well, thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes! My birthday was a pretty nice one. They had doughnuts at work, and then in the evening my friend Amy made me a vegan taco buffet and vegan pineapple upside-down cake. Yum! And we drank some good red wine, YUM! I went to buy a bottle of something for about $20 and discovered that they make my favorite red, a Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, in a small, affordable bottle for $18. So we had a couple glasses of that -- a treat, since it's usually about $50-60 for a regular bottle.

Later today, Mom and I are going to Cincinnati for a Reds game, woot! But this morning, I got up early and started digging and planting. It seems like the digging and planting never ends, so it's a good thing I have a green thumb and love gardening. It's so zen!

Anyway, remember that awful hill full of weeds I had? The one surrounded by a drainage ditch and wood? This post: http://jedishampoo.livejournal.com/126122.html

Well, last fall Mom and I put down black landscape fabric to keep the weeds from growing, and it's been good at that. However, that means that for months I've had a black, fabric landscape.

So like 7veilsphaedra suggested, I looked for some nice color and stuff I could put on the hill. I've started with three spreading junipers -- one golden, one blue, and one green, figuring groups of three were a good place to start. Man, digging in that hill is a bitch:

Then I dug up a bucketload of daylilies from the front flower bed. Man, the lady who owned this house before me had almost completely different taste in flora than I do, and had planted a gazillion daylillies. I am just not a huge fan of daylilies, though they do look nice around the mini-retaining wall I'm building (see pic below). I dug up about six giant ones and put them out front with a "FREE DAYLILIES PLEASE" sign. I dug up some of the extra Lily of the Valley (my favorite scent, by the way). Then I put in some Solomon's Seal and voila! It looks so pretty:

That's about it. Happy Mother's Day a day early to all you moms! And cat and dog moms, too!

Oh the front of your house looks so pretty! I love the random pattern of the brickwork!
