Got some stuff done today! Updated my webpage, and I finally finished Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell this morning, after starting it in May and then being distracted by all the Star Wars and Harry Potters and stuffs.

Overall I'm not sure how I felt about Jonathan Strange. I guess it was pretty good. I kept hearing "Jane Austen crossed with Harry Potter" but in the end, it was not as emotionally involving for me than either of the above. I really think it could have used some more sensibility, more feeling here and there. It was written in quite a historical fashion and was sort of interesting for that, but the extensive footnotes started to get on my last nerve. Admittedly, there were a few nicely dry, laugh-out-loud moments here and there. It would get really exciting in places, and then straightaway go back to yawn. I liked that none of the characters were all good or all bad. But I guess I was expecting to feel a little more for the people in such a long book, and really I was hardly able to "connect" with any of them, especially Strange, Norrell, and Stephen Black, except in tiny but ultimately unsatisfying moments. Arabella and Flora were the exceptions to that rule overall.

Well, for a first novel it was quite ambitious. You gotta admire Susannah Clarke for that, and for tackling the genre of the fantastic. I also liked that the fairies were bad. I hate those neverwhere, elsewhen types of fantasy stories, like "Little, Big." I want to kill all the fairies, really, just like they do in Pratchett.

I also finally put some more stories on my webpage, including a Hornblower story which was the longest thing I ever wrote, and for which the last couple of chapters once garnered more hate reviews than anything else I've written, ever. Interesting. Well, I liked it. It was practically a Regency romance novel, by my standards. ;)

I also finally put up some parodies and stuff I had on fanfiction.net under "Some Jedi Girl." Heck, who needs two names anymore! I've finally overcome MMD (multiple-moniker-disease, someone told me it's called; I think it was [livejournal.com profile] maiasaura).

Thinking about writing today and completing a third challenge on the [livejournal.com profile] swslash list, and thereby getting a banner or something. :) I put some stuff up a couple of weeks ago, but wasn't sure if I was allowed to link to them here because of an "exclusivity deadline." Seems like you can, so here.

Finish, Windu/Dooku (Short, talky, totally G-rated and not really very slashy!)

Hot Robot Hand, PG-13 (extremely silly songfic/Stover parody and only slightly slashy!)

We watched the Office, the original British miniseries. OMG. Laugh-out-loud hysterical. Wincingly embarrassing, watching the characters do really, really stupid stuff. Slightly raunchy. Watch it, if at all possible.

Done rambling now. Off to write!
