My new Obsession!

I have a new fandom. Dammit. sharpeslass was out of town over the weekend (at the Serenity/Firefly convention), and so I decided to get a start on the 50 episodes of (Gensomaden) Saiyuki that I'd purchased cheaply a while back.

OMG, this is not a fandom, it's a religion. And unlike my other anime fandoms, where I get into it YEARS after it's been over, they're still making manga and anime. Hooray!

It's yet another adaptation of the old Chinese story "Journey to the West." Four hot guys (well, three of them are hot) in a Jeep, traveling to India on the orders of the Buddhist gods, trying to stop the resurrection of an ancient evil demon. Smoking. Drinking. Chasing women. It seems formulaic, but the characters are interesting and the series has TONS of heart. It really caught me, like nothing has in the last couple of years, even Fullmetal Alchemist.

Yeah, that's the con! She's my roomie, the one who came with me to the Vegas wedding a couple years back. She says this year's was one of the best-run cons she'd ever been to, despite its having been run by Creation. (She has bad feelings about creation cons, because of some Trek cons they've run.) I went with her to the Big Damn Flanvention two years ago, when it was Booster Events who held it. Nathan Fillion is brilliant with fans.

Sweet! Yeah, I've had some bad Creation experiences myself, and totally agree; this was the most reasonably priced, best run Creation con I've ever been to. And tremendously fun, to boot!

Ohhhhh, yeah, I am rather fond of that one, also. The headband could be smaller but the expression and the pose say it all. ;)

The perspective on that other one is indeed strange but I think that's why I like it. He just looks so... dark or upset. And shirtless and tattooed. Hm.

There are some extremely tasty pics of all the boyz on the Saiyuki 2008 calendar... my roommate bought it for me for Christmas and even she thought the pics were sexy enough (for cartoon guys, she says) to hang that calendar in the kitchen. Minekura-san can draw some hot guys, sure enough.
