It's funny how comparable the scenes are! I do prefer the other art style, but this was a better fit for the story, I have to agree.
Some of DIr En Grey is brilliant - the early stuff that is. I'm not a huge fan of the later stuff. [kr]Cube is actually somewhere in the middle, and you either love it or hate it. I hated it and then it grew on me.
If you want to sample some of the early stuff, look for Akura no Oka which is lovely, or Yokan if you want upbeat. You may love or hate 24ko Cylinder (I love it). Try those and if you like them, I'll send you some more on sendspace from the earlier era ;)
*Try to ignore the outfits, although I do get a kick out of them. Poison and Crue had nothing on these boys...
