Random Stuff and Pics!

A weekend without obligation, and some random stuff:

1. The Good: a pleasant surprise. I was nominated for another LOTR fanfiction award (the MEFA, Middle-Earth-Fanfiction Awards) and won second place for Women’s Work. Wasn't that nice? :)

2. The Bad: I think I'm sick again. Sigh. Last weekend I was too ill (nauseated) to enjoy Quark's at the Hilton, and for once it wasn't because of their ultra-strong drinks. Now I have a sore throat. Argh, perhaps Trey Parker was right on South Park: maybe people who don't eat meat do get sick more often! Or maybe it's just the change in the weather.

3. More Good: Star Wars ROTS on beautiful, clear DVD. Deleted scenes! I do feel sorry for the chick who played Mon Mothma. And after all the other scifi I've been watching recently, I now have a Star Trek DS9/Star Wars crossover fanfiction idea involving Palpatine finding a piece of transwarp (Borg) technology and giving Anakin a ship. And me here with two more SW challenge stories to write.

4. The Odd: Roommate still obsessed over Firefly/Jayne, having it on TV constantly. I promised to go see Serenity again with her tomorrow, but in return she had to pause the Firefly DVD and watch four episodes of Ranma 1/2. She did it with flying colors, woohoo! Even laughed a couple of times. Now that was a surprise.

5. The Question: speaking of Firefly and anime, I have looked over some of the roommate's books about the show, even a book of essays, but have yet to see a reference to the fact that a lot of it was clearly inspired by Cowboy Bebop. Has anyone else noticed this, or seen a discussion? I'd be interested to read a comparison by someone whose brain is working better than mine is right now.

Who hoo, congrats! :-D I remember reading tyhe story on Henneth Annun (as a matter of fact, I believe that "Aerin of the Adan" commented on it ;-)) and I absolutely love it! It is most deserving! :-D And the title always makes me want to sing the Kate Bush song...

Oh, it's a lovely, lovely thing, isn't it?! And those scenes.. Okay, I was a bit disappointed the famed Obi/Ami scene wasn't on it and that alternate discussion about the plot against the Jedi was, that's really just a nitpick. Shaak Ti's death! Whooo hoo!

I've heard that too, mainly on http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html (they have some good discussions there, mainly crap now that the movie's come out though I assume it'll settle down again. I sadly, know almost nothing about Cowboy Bebop. I feel very ashamed :-(

Shaak Ti's death! Whooo hoo!

Yeah, that was a really cool scene! I especially liked the "baseball-style" planning gestures, and the wet Jedi. And really, wouldn't that have been pretty much our only chance to see Shaak-Ti up close on screen?

Woo, thanks for the browncoats link! I'm sure sharpeslass will have a good time reading that as well. And as for Cowboy Bebop, don't feel bad. I'm really behind in my anime-watching. I think Cowboy Bebop is the newest thing I've watched! I'm just now exacting revenge for all the bad/boring British movie-watching and Firefly, Buffy, and Angel-commentary-watching in our household by showing sharpeslass the Ranma 1/2 series. Bwah hah hah!

I really HATE commentaries, can you tell? Even LOTR actor commentaries put me to sleep. I don't know, I guess I don't want to know behind-the-scene stuff, because the next time I watch the particular show/movie/whatever, I think about things they said and it cuts into my suspension of disbelief. I prefer to think of movies and stuff as their own little worlds.

I totally buy the whole "new criticism" thing-- that any work, once produced and sent out into the world, really is interpreted by everyone differently and authorial intentions shouldn't have a thing to do with how people see it. I include my own writing in this-- I've certainly had things perceived differently than intended, but that's the beauty of it. It's never the same for everyone.

And speaking! I also read (and then thought about it and it's true!) that she would have been the only Jedi named onscreen aside from the staples: Mace, Yoda, Anakin and Obi! And the hand gesturing is fab! They're so much easier together in RotS, they have a nicer rapport, IMO. I do wish he had included Shaak Ti's alternate death at the hands of Anakin in the Jedi Temple!

My brother's my link to anime; I see most everything through him. The problem being that I don't see him that much to at all anymore, since he started school again. Ranma 1/2 I think was the last I saw, early ones.

It's funny, I just watched the new Titanic DVD set with Cameron's commentary and he basically said the same thing! It's funny, I'm so used to my family chatting away during movies that I like to put commentaries on when I'm alone cos it feels like I'm watching it with someone else. I know, that's very strange, but there you go ;-)

I totally agree. It's interesting to note that the aforementioned Cameron commentary on Titanic, he refuses to say if Rose is dying or dreaming at the end because he says, as I said, the exact same thing as you! :-)
