Ohayou Gozaimasu!

So after graduating from university in 2000, I finally broke down and re-entered the world of higher education to take a class in Japanese at the local community college. :) It was super-cheap; $240 for four credit hours!! But the book was $110, half the price of the class. I'd forgotten college BOOK PRICES. And believe it or not, in my first class I was shocked to learn that there would be HOMEWORK. It really hasn't been that long since I was in school, I'd just sorta wiped it all from my brain out of relief at finally getting my BA.

First-year Japanese here doesn't cover kanji, only hiragana and katakana. And I've had to make flash cards to learn them. Wow, it really is rather difficult. Ah well, now maybe if I try really hard, I can learn to somewhat better read all of my Howl's Moving Castle doujinshi, and listen to all of my anime in Japanese rather than doing the dubbed versions. ;) And I will at least know how to say "Good Morning" (ohayou gozaimasu) when my Mom and I go to Japan in September for WORLDCON!

Oh we so can't afford it... Chase the evil bank is paying. :) We're staying a week in Nippon (pretty much Tokyo, I believe) where the con is, though we probably won't see much of the con. :) And then five days traveling, going to Kyoto, Mt. Fuji, etc. I can't wait. I've always wanted to go to Japan.

'Cause I'm in school or 'cause I'm going to up my credit cards by buying myself a trip to Japan? :) And ya know, as a fellow smoker (do you still smoke?), I hear you can smoke EVERYWHERE in Japan. Which won't please my mom and a couple other people in our tour group. :)

Total across-the-board jealousy, dear. Mostly for the language classes, but also for the trip to JAPAN! And yes, I'm still working on leaving a young and lovely corpse. Smoke a couple of indoor-building puffs for me, please. I'll live vicariously through you. Ooh... see if they'll let you have one in a theatre; I've always wanted to be able to smoke at the movies...

How cool! I hope you have a lot of fun learning Japanese. How long will you stay in Japan? Are any of the Ray + harem crew going?

Thanks! I think it's a 10-day trip, five days in Tokyo and five days touring. (12 days if you count flying on a LONG flight.) And yup, Ray and the harem are going! In fact, I think Donna and Mary and Irene are doing the "expensive" trip, while Ray and my Mom and I will probably take a more economical route.

Most impressive my friend. I have a hard time with European languages, much less one with an entirely different "alphabet". You rock!
