Conversation recently overheard in our house...

"Fine. I won't f**k with you when it comes to film knowledge. And you won't f**k with me when it comes to the Thompson Twins."

Yeah, I was a huge fan of the Thompson Twins back in the day. I met them once and pissed off Tom Bailey (by accident, hell, I was eighteen and dorkarific).

And for the record, the first conversation involved something about the Flying Elvii and a movie with Nicholas Cage, and whether or not Flying Elvii as a fad were already old in the 80s or 90s or 2000s. ;)

Hope you all are well. We are not bad. Things are... things. Sorry if I've been incommunicado! But we're alive. :)

I loved Thompson Twins, too! And I touched Tom Bailey once, but did not have the chance to piss him off. *envies*

Just how did you touch him? Heh.

I stood out back behind a small show with about five other people, one of whom was a music nerd who kept asking TB about the influence of Indian music and after the fifth question I was all "UNHnnnn!" And Tom Bailey gave me a dirty look. Then I towered over him and had my picture taken with him anyway, even though he was still miffed at me. ;)

I have no idea what you posted about -- Thompson Twins, Flying Elvii etc. though I do know who Nicholas Cage is. He plays weird characters that don't blink.

Haha, Nicolas Cage is indeed very weird, I agree. :)

Thompson Twins-- 80s band, "Love on Your Side" and "Hold me Now," etc. I lurved them. I threw my bra at them at another show. My mother was very upset when she came to get me after the concert and I had lost my bra.

The Flying Elvii (Or Elvi, I suppose) are a group of Elvis impersonators who jump out of planes: http://www.flyingelvi.com/home.html

Despite not being a fan of Elvis Presley, I have a real soft spot for Elvis impersonators. I find them strangely charming and cute.

*waves* I also was a big Thompson Twins fan. (I even named a Gravitation story after their song "Doctor, Doctor". It actually made sense in the context of the story, too.) Sadly, they seemed to disappear quickly. Did they even make more than the one album?

Glad to know you and [livejournal.com profile] sharpeslass, who surfaced for my post on the 100th anniversary of Akira Kurosawa's birth, are still around and kicking. It occurred to me, as I was responding to one of her comments, that maybe renting Japanese films and listening to the original dialogue while reading the subtitles, might be of some use to your comprehension of the language. It's an idea, anyway.

::saves back:: I loved Thompson Twins! I had about four albums... so they did do several. And a soundtrack or two.

We're alive, not kicking much!

I need to definitely brush up on my Japanese while I'm not taking classes-- I'm sure an older or more formal movie would probably be a good idea. :)

Soundtrack? Of what? Obviously I missed their albums other than the famous one, which I think was also their first - the one with "Hold Me Now", "Doctor, Doctor", and so on.

If [livejournal.com profile] sharpeslass rents Drunken Angel or one of the other contemporary (at the time) Kurosawa films I suggested, listen to the dialogue and snicker at the fact that the word 'uke' is translated as 'wimp'. (In context, it makes sense. I thought it was interesting that it was used in colloquial Japanese to mean something other than 'catcher', whether in the literal or figurative sense.) I'm sure there's a 'baka' or two in there as well. Also, Toshiro Mifune, who plays a mid-level member of the yakuza, makes nice eye candy as well as being a good actor, and there's a struggle between his character and the doctor who's trying to treat him (the drunken angel of the title) that looks very slashy.

They did a song and some instrumentals on the Cool World soundtrack (horrible, horrible movie, decent dance-club soundtrack) and, oh, Nothing in Common soundtrack, and I can't remember what else. :)

Ha, that album was Into the Gap. Before that were a couple, including Side Kicks, the one with "Love on your Side" and "Lies" and that "If you were here," from the 16 Candles soundtrack. And they had a couple afterwards, that were never as huge. But I loved them all.

Nice to know you guys are still around. I hope that 'things' only get better for both of you. ♥

I didn't recognize a single name in this post though, aside from Nicholas Cage. Okay, he's hot.

Heh, Tom Bailey was the lead singer for The Thompson Twins. This was their big song (Hold me now): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhULwcm22dQ

Hope you are doing OK! :)

Okay. I know the song at least, even if I didn't recognize the names.

Life is difficult right now, but it's nothing I can't handle... I think.

Oh the Thompson Twins. The memories. And I have many of them. I know exactly (I think) what movie you're talking about with the Flying Elvii. Glad to hear you're both okay, and did I mention I can't wait to see you both in about 3 weeks? YIPPIE!

Isn't it a general rule of thumb that as soon as an act hits Vegas, it's "old?"

I dunno. I still think Elvii are pretty darned funny, but others are tired of them. :) (Lives in Vegas.)

I loved the Thompson Twins so much! One of my very, very 80s obsessions.
