[livejournal.com profile] sharpeslass Netflixed "Howl's Moving Castle" for us, and OhMyGosh I fell in love with this movie! I hadn't seen it yet; I love Miyazaki (well, except for Princess Mononoke, ick) but it looked so much like "Castle in the Sky" that I hadn't been in a hurry to watch it.

It had all the usually Miyazaki components: sweeping score, wonderful animation, redemption of characters, something bulbous and evil losing its powers, and a Message (this time it was "war is bad"). Unlike most of his other stuff, however, it was based on a book already written, this time on a young adults book by Diana Wynne Jones. I had to go buy the book instantly. I can't say I loved the book as much as the movie; I personally like the Miyazaki touches.

It was also a little more "adult" than his other stuff, not in tone, but in that he's dealing with mostly adult characters rather than the prepubescent set. There was even a romance!

::sigh:: I loved it so very much. :) Anyone else see it?

Heh. And I really liked the movie, despite the fact that he made all sorts of changes to a book I love. I think it's actually best to view them as two completely separate things... that said, I think the book just plain makes more sense, but the movie is stunningly beautiful.

If you get a chance to track it down, there's actually a sequel to the book: Castle in the Air (not to be confused with "Castle in the Sky" by Miyazaki!)

Ooh, there's a sequel to the book? I didn't see that next to it at Borders... same author?

I liked the book OK-- I pretty much sped through it because I was dying to see what happened (especially since about halfway through the movie deviated completely!)... I liked the characters of the sisters and the depth they added.

The movie touched something, though. I can't really describe it. Spirited Away did the same for me, and Kiki's Delivery Service. Who bawls through Miyazaki films? Me! ;)
