Snow! Pics
Dec. 18th, 2008 03:22 pmSo, since I wailed about the snow, I took pictures when I got home. Yeah, yeah, all you northerners/easterners say, pictures of snow are just not that exciting. Still, I thought pictures of our poor suffering palm trees and oleander might be appropriate. Apparently it was the biggest snowfall in Las Vegas since 1979.
It was supposed to be in the 30s all week and I was afraid everything would die, but wonder of wonders! It was nice and sunny today and probably near 50, so I hope that at home it's all melted (bwah hah hah, take that, winter!).
Here's a very unhappy oleander bush that is normally a couple of feet taller than I am:

An even unhappier palm tree in our front yard-- they looked like this all over the city, with just one part in the middle pointing up, the rest all bowed out (I took this pic for my mom, to show her the live wreath she'd sent us that I just received):

Our summery furniture in the backyard: woe!

It's a glass table and I brushed it off with a broom last night and
sharpeslass thought I was insane, but then they showed pics of collapsed carports and whatnot. I really didn't want to clean 10 square feet of broken glass off the patio.
Yeah, not that exciting to anyone but us here in the sunny southwest, I know. :)
ETA: and OT-- Oh No! I have just learned that Majel Barret Roddenberry died today. :( I loved her in all her incarnations in Star Trek.

Date: 2008-12-19 12:27 am (UTC)Well, it was very wet, heavy snow. And apparently, even more wet, heavy snow dropped off of trees onto the wet, heavy snow-laden carports, which then collapsed. I'm sure they were cheaply built, since people were complaining about our desert winds knocking some over, too. Well, we do get very strong winds here in the valley. ;)

Date: 2008-12-19 12:35 am (UTC)I whine because I moved to the desert to get away from the snow and ice. I must admit, I drove in it for 15 years but it scared the crap outta me, because of all the people who hit me in those years. :)

Date: 2008-12-19 03:24 am (UTC)What's fun (especially around Christmas) is when you live in a place that doesn't get snow, like Nevada (or England!), so when it does snow, it's magical. Wow, I got carried away with it there LOL
I'm hoping for a snow day. A nice, 53 fic-worthy snow day LOL Piccies will follow if it's any good! *hugs*

Is that the big ashtray hidden under the snow? Damn...
Your Star Trek news is sad news indeed. She was awesome.

Date: 2008-12-19 12:39 pm (UTC)Three hours ago I was guessing 4-5 inches had already fallen; the windows are now covered so I can't really say.
Thank you for posting your Vegas snow pics!

Date: 2008-12-19 05:55 am (UTC)We had hail the other day but it only lasted long enough for us to point and say "oh, my god, it's hailing!" and then it was done.

Date: 2008-12-19 04:57 pm (UTC)Ick, hail. Of course, I think SF is way too cold in the middle of summer. But it stays that same temperature all year, right?

Date: 2008-12-19 04:51 pm (UTC)Bah! It's really absurd. You are having snow where it should be warm and shiny (poor plants!) and we in our Central European part of Russia have none though it's pretty cold. It's very dry and dusty here. Snow is better where it's supposed to be :\
