Snow! Pics

So, since I wailed about the snow, I took pictures when I got home. Yeah, yeah, all you northerners/easterners say, pictures of snow are just not that exciting. Still, I thought pictures of our poor suffering palm trees and oleander might be appropriate. Apparently it was the biggest snowfall in Las Vegas since 1979.

It was supposed to be in the 30s all week and I was afraid everything would die, but wonder of wonders! It was nice and sunny today and probably near 50, so I hope that at home it's all melted (bwah hah hah, take that, winter!).

Here's a very unhappy oleander bush that is normally a couple of feet taller than I am:

An even unhappier palm tree in our front yard-- they looked like this all over the city, with just one part in the middle pointing up, the rest all bowed out (I took this pic for my mom, to show her the live wreath she'd sent us that I just received):

Our summery furniture in the backyard: woe!

It's a glass table and I brushed it off with a broom last night and [livejournal.com profile] sharpeslass thought I was insane, but then they showed pics of collapsed carports and whatnot. I really didn't want to clean 10 square feet of broken glass off the patio.

Yeah, not that exciting to anyone but us here in the sunny southwest, I know. :)

ETA: and OT-- Oh No! I have just learned that Majel Barret Roddenberry died today. :( I loved her in all her incarnations in Star Trek.

What? 5 cms. of snow and there have been collapsed carports? You've got to be joking! What do they build them with, cardboard? Sticky tape? Like this?

Heh, I'll have to watch that when I get home. :)

Well, it was very wet, heavy snow. And apparently, even more wet, heavy snow dropped off of trees onto the wet, heavy snow-laden carports, which then collapsed. I'm sure they were cheaply built, since people were complaining about our desert winds knocking some over, too. Well, we do get very strong winds here in the valley. ;)

It would take a lot of snow to collapse glass and metal patio furniture. We get heavy, wet snow in my area, too. It takes about 1-2 meters accumulation before the rooftops on mobile homes start to wow under the weight. A sudden drop off overhanging trees is a different matter---but I don't know if brushing off the accumulation would help in that case anyway. (Depending on the type of tree, those drops could include a fair chunk of wood as well, especially in a wind.)

I'm sure you're right... I mean, we put dinners on there, right? Drunken people? Still, I was a little freaked by the snow and well, I'm just usually overly cautious, anyway. :) I also brushed off the Jacuzzi cover... and my rosemary plant.

Might as well enjoy it while it lasts there.

Hee..I've got 3 feet of snow and minus 15 today. The snow is here until march.

Heh, I saw your pics and post about "ice-fishing." Brrr! (Very pretty, though.)

I whine because I moved to the desert to get away from the snow and ice. I must admit, I drove in it for 15 years but it scared the crap outta me, because of all the people who hit me in those years. :)

Oh my gosh, that is wild! @_@ It snowed here back in... oh, '89, and the people here just had no clue how to deal with it! They were like, 'But the road is all icy! Why is the road icy!' Admittedly, it's been a looong time since I've had a snowy winter (fifteen years actually) but I do miss the white stuff, le sigh!

Ooh, ice in FL would be dangerous!

I may be a Scrooge but I don't miss it at all. ;) I want sun and 100+ dry days... I can sun myself on a rock like a lizard...

Ah snow in Vegas. It's all over the news today. Part of me wishes I was there with you both to enjoy ... another part is simply wishing we had that LITTLE snow...as I get ready to head into the snow belt this weekend. Still, it's neat to see so thanks!

That's what I hear, that we made national news with our little storm! :) I remember a big storm we had in Indiana once... I wrote an article for the university paper called "Doppler-palooza '98." ;)

Be careful, sweets!

I love snow pictures!! Expect some tomorrow if it's a good storm! ;-)

Hang on...you have leaves on stuff!!! *shocked* I've already forgotten what foliage looks like! ;-) And your palm tree picture is incredible, wow.

Majel Barret is dead? oh no!

The snow on our side of the street had melted, yay, and the palm and oleander are upright once more. :) The other side of the street is still covered with snow (and one of the neighbor's trees is totally broken)!!

You'll see leaves in February, too! Yeah, take pictures-- I want to see your snow and be ashamed of my own wibbliness over it. ;)

I can remember snow in England as a kid and we would get SO excited. Of course it doesn't compare to our yearly dumpings of feet of snow, but we are used to it.

What's fun (especially around Christmas) is when you live in a place that doesn't get snow, like Nevada (or England!), so when it does snow, it's magical. Wow, I got carried away with it there LOL

I'm hoping for a snow day. A nice, 53 fic-worthy snow day LOL Piccies will follow if it's any good! *hugs*

Wow.. that's a lot more snow than when I was out there earlier this week. They are saying that it is heading this way. I say.. you can keep it!!

*grin*

Is that the big ashtray hidden under the snow? Damn...

Your Star Trek news is sad news indeed. She was awesome.

Yup, we can't blame it on you anymore. ;) And that is indeed the big, blue ashtray. I finally fished it out tonight and it's like a block of ash-ice... Hee!

Weather here is predicted to get 8-13 inches snow over tonight and tomorrow. I may not leave for work tommorow. Have to see if the snow plow comes to our street in the morning. BTW, I live in Wisconsin.

Oh, Wisconsin! Flat and snowy, surely! Be careful if you do have to go. :)

[livejournal.com profile] minidrag33must live near me, then, because that was our forecast too.

Three hours ago I was guessing 4-5 inches had already fallen; the windows are now covered so I can't really say.

Thank you for posting your Vegas snow pics!

I was not aware that it snowed in Vegas...ever. It's a little surreal to think about, actually. :)

We had hail the other day but it only lasted long enough for us to point and say "oh, my god, it's hailing!" and then it was done.

It doesn't snow here, usually! In the foothills and higher elevations there might be a few flakes that never stick, but down in the valley-- on the Strip? I've never seen it snow there and I've lived here 8 years! :) It was super-freaky.

Ick, hail. Of course, I think SF is way too cold in the middle of summer. But it stays that same temperature all year, right?

Date: 2008-12-19 08:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moshesque.livejournal.com
Wow, look at the size of those flakes!

From: [identity profile] jedishampoo.livejournal.com
Big and fat wet flakes! ::brrr:: It was really wet and humid, too, which is just as weird as the snow. (Usually we're at about a 15% humidity or less.)

Give. It. Back!

Bah! It's really absurd. You are having snow where it should be warm and shiny (poor plants!) and we in our Central European part of Russia have none though it's pretty cold. It's very dry and dusty here. Snow is better where it's supposed to be :\

It's going away... heading east, so maybe, in a week or so, that storm will cross the Atlantic and drop lots of stuff on you? :)

To the very south of Chile it does, but where I live no, almost never. Last year it snow, and it was like 10 years after the last snow.

Happy holidays!! :D

It is neat... we were going to look for a cactus with snow on it and take a picture and add a thought bubble for the cactus... "WTF?" :)
