The Weird Thing about Hormones.

Warning to men, this is female stuff: Move along. ;)

Ovulation. All I want to do is (1) Eat a lot of junk food, and (2) look at pictures of hot men, and think about hot men, and (3) never you mind.

I would say that the excessive dreaming about hot men has something to with primal urges to reproduce. Except, if I'm eating a lot of junk food, I'm probably making myself LESS attractive to hot men because: (a) I'm fatter, and (b) I have cracker crumbs all down the front of my dress and (c) why am I drooling over pictures of Hayden Christensen he's more than ten years younger than I am for heaven's sake?

I don't understand. ::is it hot in here?::

Speaking of which... I never was sure if I wanted to put stock in that idea that chocolate actually "keys off" the same kind of chemical responses in your body as sex. I mean, yeah, chocolate is good. And some chocolate is even exceptionally good. But I don't know that I've ever had any chocolate that's quite THAT good. Still, why is it that during certain hormonal peak times I literally CRAVE the stuff? Not to mention, prolonged exposure to Ewan (or other similarly attractive men, whether they be 10 years our junior or not) does tend to make me think, "gee, some chocolate would be really good about now"? ; )

The biological explanation is pretty straightforward -- the physical, hormonal, and emotional changes are all part of a genetic imperative to perpetuate the species and your gene pool specifically. Junk food craving might be explained as a more modern version of the imperative to locate and consume calories in as dense a format as possible -- on the assumption that if the procreative drive nature has implanted in a woman is successful, she'll need those extra calories for maternal and fetal health. Alternatively, the food companies have spent gadzillions to produce foods that are pleasurable to eat -- "mouth feel" for instance, is very important to ice cream and high fat foods. Chocolate, the complex food that it is, probably has psychoactive properties as well. Maybe you crave junk because its been designed to trigger some pleasure receptors.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. The "denser calories" makes sense. And there are only two times a month when I want chocolate. (Otherwise I'm a fruity sugar candy kind of gal.) And, sharpeslass put the whole Hayden thing into perspective. When your body is promoting its genetic agenda you would naturally go for the taller, younger male. ;)
