I just realized that I turn 39 in two days. Argh! Our 25-year-old mailroom guy told me "at least you're not 40 yet." I usually think 40 is young. Until I approach it. Such a hypocrite. :) Aw, I always get this way around my birthday. Ever since I turned 24 or so, I've managed to feel sorry for myself on my birthday. It's a personality flaw, I think.

I need porn. Will someone please write some unpretentious porn? Or if you're not of the porny persuasion, post me a picture of a pretty man?

Ummm, yeah. He definitely looks very...manly, if that's the right word. :) And "partially imaginary," how? I don't recognize him. (Woefully behind on my non-Saiyuki manga reading. Though I did read Crimson Spell #1, and it was cheese but actually rather fun. And the boys were very pretty.)

Well, I guess I should have said "semi-fictional."   ;-)   That's the young Miyamoto Musashi from the semi-biographical historical manga Vagabond, which has some of the most beautiful artwork of any manga I know (more pix here). But it's very shounen manly-man "I must become the greatest swordsman" stuff. I got the artbook at Katuscon - just gorgeous.

40 is the best time! You have enough experience, but you're still vibrant enough to make the most of it.

You tell that 25-year-old ass that he shouldn't be so fast to dismiss 40. He doesn't know what he's missing. It's when women hit their stride.

Gah, Tom Cruise. And yet, I still like him in some movies.. Watanabe Ken was really good in Last Samurai! But if you can't handle the crazy that is Tom Cruise, you could try his other movies - Memoirs of a Geisha and Letters from Iwo Jima. I haven't seen Iwo Jima yet, but it got excellent reviews!

Well, you will ALWAYS be younger than I am!! And I always found the years right before and right after big ones to be rather more... difficult, I suppose. Having spent the last 7 years in them, I do think that the 40's are really pretty cool. When you get there, I know you'll enjoy them too.

Heh. Yeah, 29 was particularly bad, as I remember. Ah well, I'm sure I'll continue to enjoy the years. It's just... each year reminds me of the things I haven't done yet-- gotten married, had kids. I know it's still possible but I begin to worry.

On another note, I'm trying to get out to DC to see y'all fabulous ladies at the end of this month... the gummint sent me $600 so I might as well do as they wish and support the economy. Guess I'd better hurry. :)

Music to my ears, that you "usually think 40 is young."

I freaked out when I turned 40. My rationale was that if you looked at people who are 40 and looked at people who are 50 -- it's pretty obvious that a lot of change happens in that decade.

Ten years later, I can affirm that, yup, lots of change happens. But so much of how old you feel depends on your mindset. I keep going to JadeCons and enjoying things like High School Musical and reading books like Harry Potter -- that helps keep me young (even if my body is falling apart).

And as someone else said -- you'll always be younger than me.
